I believe that our world needs the perspective offered by those who see the big picture.
Maybe you've left, or are considering leaving your job at a big company to start your own business. You want to be more innovative or live a more well-rounded life, and to make a contribution to something important. You're ready to take the next step, to learn how your insights and approach can make the difference you know is possible.
As a big-picture thinker myself, I understand that sometimes it feels liberating to be able to see things holistically, visually, strategically, and sometimes it feels as if you're the only one who can see how the parts fit together to form a whole.
Whether your focus is on delivering effective healthcare, improving the way people work, or optimizing the structures in which we live, there is a place in the world for your ideas.
During a coaching engagement, we attend to the important factors that enable your contribution in the world, moving seamlessly between your leadership development needs and the structural needs of the business. I incorporate both tried-and-true business know-how with innovative approaches that will increase your access to your gifts as an individual and a leader.
Visit my website for a wealth of ideas and tools dedicated to helping big-picture thinkers move their ideas from concept to contribution, or contact me to set up a complimentary consultation.

WHY I DO WHAT I DO:
I was born in San Jose, California at a time when fruit orchards and living things still shaped silicon-valley's way of seeing the world. Over the years, a technological mindset replaced the biological, and organizations started treating people like machines„as upgradable, available 24/7, and disposable when no longer effective.
I do what I do because I love reminding people that the best things in life aren't things! I help organizations thrive by enabling their people to live and work with greater skill, compassion and effectiveness.
Create a refuge for your creativity and intellect to open a possibility.
I have been working in dimensions of strategic change for more than 15 years. However, it is only in the last 5 that I have made a shift toward including the body, the holistic self and person in embodied learning. This moves me into the places I really care about _ and it allows me to work with others creatively and deeply while being grounded in the science of the brain-body, as well as traditions of human development and learning. We all seek integration, and possibilities open as we operate more from our center and who we are.
I have a PhD in Energy and Resources from U.C. Berkeley. I am also a certified professional coach from New Ventures West in San Francisco. I also serve as adjunct faculty in the professional course at New Ventures West. My first career was in energy and international development. I worked with private institutions, consulting companies, government agencies, universities, and non-profits. I was a researcher, adviser, scenarist, and social scientist. Earlier, I was also a physical scientist.
I am motivated by the integration of yin and yang presence ~ doing and being, intelligence and wisdom, in our lives and organizational worlds.
Learning in our real lives and our personal-professional roles is exciting, but it is also messy. I have a deep alignment and respect for people in these times. I devote my intellect, skill, and practice to these spaces. I open and invite you to share that space, to own it and make it yours.
You can contact me for i) professional-workplace coaching, ii) personal change coaching, and iii) somatic and healing work. I work with organizations and individuals in-person and by phone and video conference. Contact me to see if we are a good fit. I have recently relocated to the Boulder, CO area from the SF Bay Area.

Drawing on the work of visionary developmental psychologist Jean Piaget, this curriculum braids together academic and social-emotional development. It supports continuous professional learning by providing teachers with materials that engage and motivate students, develop critical thinkers, and promote reflection about learning and community.
´ As a writer focusing on avant-garde poetics I've published two books with a third on the way (Lizard, due out from Chax Press in 2015), as well as numerous chapbooks, and have seen my work published widely in magazines and anthologies. I'm the recipient of the Leo Litwak Fiction Award and several grant-supported writing residencies. From 2009_2011, I was an Affiliate Artist at Headlands Center for the Arts. I've served on the California Book Awards poetry jury since 2012.
´ As a creative writing teacher at the University of San Francisco, San Francisco State University, Santa Clara University, and California Poets in the Schools, and in private workshops and one-to-one consultations, I've helped thousands of people of all ages access their creativity and use it to shape vibrant art.
´ As a student of diverse art forms and somatic practices, I've studied theater, flute, figure drawing, dance, Tai Chi, yoga, Qi Gong, TRE (trauma release exercise), and EFT (emotional freedom technique). I've created and performed solo and collaborative multimedia pieces incorporating various combinations of poetry, recorded and live voice, movement, still images, and film. I've practiced meditation for the past 20 years, and in 2015 did my first month-long silent meditation retreat.
´ As a breast cancer survivor I've been to hell and back.

As a certified executive coach, I am passionate about working with leaders in mission-driven organizations, with women and men who take on the cares of the world but may not always include their own care and development in the mix.
These are not theoretical issues for me; I have walked the walk of these leaders in my work as a journalist, corporate executive and nonprofit leader. I have created new businesses, built creative teams and helped lead organizational change--while managing up, down and sideways. I have benefited from coaching and I have integrated coaching insights into my work and into my life as a wife, mother and friend. I have experienced all manner of career and personal thrills and chills; out of that has come a sense of resilience, wisdom and joy that I bring to my work with clients.
I am proud to share the many insights and resources associated with an integral style of coaching: the latest discoveries in organizational development, neuroscience and psychology as well age-old philosophical and spiritual traditions, mindfulness and full-body listening.
How coaching works
I will partner with you to help you scan aspects of your work and life that you may never have thought to look at„from the profound to the practical. You will surface assumptions: What defines success for you? What are your strengths and challenges as a leader? How do you bring yourself to the teams you lead, the colleagues you collaborate with? You will take a close look at your everyday rhythms and rituals. How do you incorporate exercise, relaxation, eating and social habits into your daily life? How do these personal habits impact your work life, your management style, your productivity, your satisfaction?
You will develop awareness about how the varied parts of your life are connected. You will connect your personal development to organizational goals. You will reset everyday assumptions, habits and activities so that you can work and live with more capacity now and in the future. We will create a plan so that your daily life and work reflect the values, vocation and personal priorities you find important.
What you bring to coaching
You only need to bring an open mind and a commitment to slow down, ask questions, reflect on your experiences, strengths and challenges--and a willingness to try new options. I know how hard change can be, but I will create a safe place for you to explore this new territory. Together we will figure out a path that makes sense„for you.
I look forward to hearing from you.
ñRachael's unique balance of kindness and rigor offered me the guidance I needed to re-establish my life's work. She provided the required tools for me to reevaluate my past successes and then offered the encouragement I needed to rebuild a future based on the things I love to do. But most importantly, she helped me turn my vision into a viable working plan with actual results.î„James L., New York City

Selected Coaching Examples
Nelson has coached senior leaders across numerous business functions (e.g., General Management, Marketing, Sales) across the tech sector, and technical-function (e.g., Engineering, Program Management, IT) leaders across both low-tech and high-tech industries. His engagements include issues dealing with:
High Potential Development: Working with succession plan candidates or other high potentials to ensure that they will be prepared for an increased level of responsibility. Example: The high-performing Director of Engineering for an Aerospace division of a Fortune 300 company was averaging a 65-hour work-week, and would likely be overwhelmed by any increased responsibility. His coaching program focused on developing the capacity to avoid over committing to stakeholder demands and on improving the clarity of his delegation. After only 6-months of coaching he was able to reduce his average work-week to 52-hours and to increase the white space in his calendar so that his staff had much easier access to his valued input. At the same time, his organizationÍs performance as measured by on-time design releases improved.
Executive Coaching & Development: Working with senior executives to identify and achieve behavioral shifts that will improve their effectiveness.
Example: The Vice President of Sales for a large technology company did not adequately challenge his organizationÍs performance, and was not very decisive. His coaching program focused on his personality-rooted lack of assertiveness and featured practices aimed at developing the ability to not avoid or delay necessary confrontation, to hold people accountable to demanding commitments, and to base those commitments on good planning and analytics. Feedback from the organization was that he achieved those behavior shifts, and as a consequence, his sales organization had stepped up its game.
Executive Coaching & Development: Working with senior executives to identify and close competency gaps that are undermining their leadership effectiveness.
Example: A Group Vice President for Technology at a Fortune 300 firm desired to improve his ability to influence division General Managers (GMÍs) and division engineering-leaders over which he had no formal authority. His coaching program focused on improving his ability to develop trusting relationships with those stakeholders, and included practices aimed at coming across more authentically than previously allowed by his usually carefully managed facade, and a practice to increase his competence as an empathetic listener. The result was an exponential increase in his influence and impact.
Leadership Agenda: Working with senior executives to address specific organizational and leadership issues as they arise.
Example: Assisted the Vice President for Research & Development in a mid-size technology company in transitioning from a project-based product-development approach to a matrix-management approach. This allowed a level of functional oversight to individual product developments that could not be supported across independently managed projects without him being personally involved at a technical level. It thus also supported the developmental-coaching goal of him better empowering his organization.

I am an experienced coach who wants to help you effect personal transformation and move forward to building a more fulfilling life. I would enjoy supporting you as I have supported many through difficult personal and significant professional transitions. No matter what brings you to seek a coach, my goal is to help bring growth and satisfaction to your experience. Each life path holds many transitions and I have deep experience to share on what it takes to create, reinvent, persevere, and find personal leadership that serves your vision and heart.
I hold a BA in Physics, Maters in Business, and MA in Psychology. I am a trained grief counselor and Certified Senior Advisor, as well as a Certified Integral Coach.
Currently, I focus on two distinct practices: High-tech Professional Development Coaching and Parent Care Coaching.
High-tech Professional Development Coaching
With over 25 years working with technology businesses and over 10 years as a therapist, counselor, and coach, I bring a deep understanding of personal an professional development. I understand much of the challenges, dynamics, and environments in which today's technology professionals must work and I can offer the steps to find clarity and move forward. Each client has unique needs and we will develop a personal coaching program for you.
I am particularly interested in the development of leadership in one's personal life to bring capacity to discern and act with confidence in one's own agency and power. This may involve a number of different explorations, including:
- Personal mindfulness, integration, and wholeness
- Stress reduction and focus
- Enhancing coherence of values in each arena of participation
- Improving collaboration, effectiveness, and orchestration of efforts
- Creative process and vision development
- Entrepreneurship and managing start-up relationships
- Tending to career path and response to disruptions to it
- Mentoring the refinement of thought process, decision making, and communications
- Finding heart, spirit, and energy in all the above
Parent Care Coaching
Supporting my own parents through their aging and end-of life brought significant challenges and growth for me. I have found that the adult children and families facing this part of the arc of life have little support and little time for the profound transition taking place. I coach clients to help find the path, orientation, and positioning that serves their best intention for their parents while enabling greater personal awareness and integration. This usually includes four key focus areas:
- Resource identification and organization
- Decision making
- Family communications/working with siblings
- Self Care through the depth and aftermath

I am dedicated to partnership that frees you up for your qualities and competencies to emerge across all aspects of your work, your life and the world you inhabit. I have served over 180 clients through nine years of practice in China, Thailand, France, and now my native Singapore.
I partner clients who want to develop skill and elegance in desired and inevitable change. Working at your momentum, I draw from a symphony of experience that includes Leadership Embodiment®, Enneagram of Personality®, and the psych-spiritual-somatic work of Brennan Healing Science® and Pathwork®. While these provide theories, models and practices, my attunement to my clients springs from over 15 years of my own development.
From my own life frequented with interruptions, I valued the life-changing teachings they offered and chose to skillfully stay tuned in. From transforming organisations in my change consulting career, I brought my focus to developmental change.
I lead people to new possibilities of themselves, and foster the embodied learning needed for this to happen.
My gifts – deep listening, intuition and enquiry – invitingly align clients toward self-empowering ways of being.
I served Singapore Government Ministries, Prime Minister’s Office Singapore, Fortune 500 leaders, professionals and individuals from the fields of education, creative arts, health, engineering, capacity-building, entrepreneurship and coaching.
I am passionate about education and nurturing. I serve as Faculty for the Professional Coaching Course with New Ventures West. Through "The Aliveness Programme" that I co-create with Courage & Renewal Australasia, I coach leaders, educators and nurturers on integrating who they are with what they do. My perspectives on cross-cultural evolution have been invited as a speaker and mediator with a think tank from French universities HEC, Sciences Po, INSEAD, ESCP and Centrale; as well as at Networking Women Lille, a 1200-strong women entrepreneurs’ community where I was a founding member.
I contribute through writing to preserve our cultural heritage and spiritual legacy, serving educational foundations like 84000.co, graced by the patronage of the Royal Family of Bhutan.
I am available for corporate and individual coaching, and coach mentoring.
