Unfolding Leadership
Everyone in business culture knows that the shift from a manufacturing economy to an information economy in the past four decades created a demand for higher levels of education than ever before.
What is not understood is that this shift also created new demands on our cognitive, emotional, somatic, relational, and spiritual resources. Specifically, what’s needed is a greater capacity for creativity, personal responsibility, courage, authenticity, emotional fortitude, compassion, resilience, and self-direction—in short, more competent leadership. This is not just needed from those at the top of the organization. It is needed from everyone.
At every level, in every organization, community, and family, competent leadership is needed. You've probably noticed that right now the world is in turmoil. We are struggling with economic problems, ecological problems, and social injustice, just to name some of the bigger messes. Many of us are having a difficult time finding someone to trust. Who will rescue us? In our view, this question has us looking in the wrong place. The history of the world is full of stories about individuals who stepped forward to lead in difficult times. Those people weren't waiting to be rescued.
The place to look for the leadership you need is within yourself. Each of us is called to lead. We are each called to respond fully to our situation moment by moment, with everything that we are, in order to bring about something that is bigger than ourselves. Each moment is an invitation to lead. Repeatedly accepting the invitation to lead requires developing ourselves—cognitively, emotionally, somatically, relationally, and spiritually—so that we have what it takes to invent new possibilities and move things forward in the face of difficulties.
We invite you to engage in this development in the Unfolding Leadership Teleclass and in the Called to Lead workshop.
